Why is reducing waste to landfill so important?
Why is reducing waste to landfill so important? If green waste is added to your normal general waste bin, it is dumped and capped in landfill. In landfill, organic material decomposes without oxygen (anaerobically). The process of anaerobic decomposition produces methane, a gas with a global warming potential 25 times greater than carbon dioxide, and other odorous gases like hydrogen sulfide.
Organic waste in landfill also generates leachate, liquid that’s created as material decomposes. Leachate must be carefully managed as it contains harmful substances that can pollute groundwater and waterways if not contained.
By recycling your green waste you prevent it going to landfill, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, odour and problems associated with leachate production.
But that’s not the only benefit.
Composting is better for the environment
Once collected, your green waste is composted – this is a natural process of decomposition in the presence of oxygen that is far better for the environment and produces useful materials that can be put back into the earth to feed the soil and make plants grow better.
Composting turns green waste into a range of high quality natural soil conditioning products such as mulches, composts, blended soils and potting mixes for landscaping, horticultural and agricultural uses. Products perfect for returning to the earth, enriching the soil and helping to grow healthier crops and pastures, producing healthier foods for everyone. Today’s waste can grow tomorrow’s lunch!
