Old Orchard’s orchard
We would love to build a community orchard. Old Orchard Primary School is built on the grounds of an old pear orchard. We would love to be able to restore the history by planting orchard trees and making this available to the students to use during their Kitchen / Garden program as well as for students / teachers / parents and the community in general. Currently each class collects compost from their food scraps on a daily basis. These food scraps are added to our worm farm and the wonderful compost produced will then help feed our orchard trees.
With the abundance of fruit from Old Orchard’s Orchard, local community members, school families and students working in our kitchen / garden program will all benefit. We would invite these groups to help upkeep the orchard and in turn feel free to pick the produce for personal use. Our kitchen / garden program would also include fruit on it’s menu and students would be encouraged to also pick and eat the fruit throughout the year.
Regular working bees together with our current kitchen / garden program would ensure that the orchard is constantly maintained. Students, as part of their learning through our current kitchen / garden program would it is regularly watered, fertilised and maintained.
The area we would like to develop is currently void of vegetation. Therefore, Old Orchard’s orchard would increase our bio-diversity. Our current composting practices would be used to feed back to our orchard.
